WEB DESIGN FAQ:

Q: Do you work from templates?
A: No. I have found most templates to be unweildy and limiting. Several sites I inherited had to be freed from their templates since they rendered very poorly in some browsers. In order to have more creative control, I like to begin with a blank slate. Wouldn't you rather have a site which is unique?

Q: Do you design in CSS?
A: No. Support for many CSS elements is spotty across the wide array of browsers out there. I do use CSS where it makes sense and when it renders well in most browsers. Many of the sites I have inherited have suffered from CSS problems and I have restored them to reflect the originally intended design, free of CSS incompatabilities.

Q: I've heard that Flash sites can't be searched by the Internet Crawlers. How do you get around this problem?
A: A crawler page is created outside of the Flash (swf) files which contains all of your text, links and keywords.

Total access to your web designer — responsive to your dreams, goals and needs — creating a unique web presence for you...

My web clients range from those who utilize total support of their websites (initial creation, control panel management and updates) to client maintained sites which I have created.

Designing Your Site

  • Consultation — The first stage of building your website is an initial consultation when we will talk about your goals for your business and/or organization and how this relates to your site. We'll outline the various parts of the site, discuss color schemes, graphics, photos and text. We'll determine whether or not you would benefit from a Flash enabled site or whether some Flash pieces scattered throughout the site might be effective. (See "Web Site Options" below.) If you have a budget, we'll discuss what we can do for what you have budgeted. We'll also discuss web hosting if you don't already have a server. (See "Hosting" under "Managing and Maintaining Your Website" below.) Finally, we'll figure out what you'll need to get to me to begin work (text, graphics or photos).
  • Estimate — After the initial consultation, I'll provide you an estimate within 24 hours. The estimate is not firm, but I will keep you informed at all stages if it looks like we need to re-adjust the estimate. Most often, going over the estimate will be because of added elements we didn't figure into the initial estimate.
  • Preview — After agreeing to the initial estimate, I'll put together a preview of the homepage and make it available on-line in a secure directory on my server. We'll agree to a deadline on getting the preview up for you to view.
  • Fashioning the site — Once the preview is approved, I'll put together the entire site and have you view it — again, in a secure directory on my server. We can go back and forth on this several times as part of a creative process.
  • Testing the Site — I'll test the site in a number of browsers during the entire process to insure that the site has the best consistency possible, no matter what browser is used.
  • Publishing the Site — When the entire site is approved, it will be uploaded to the server.
Web Site Options
  • HTML site with Fireworks components, CSS supporting text.
  • HTML site with Fireworks and Flash components, CSS supporting text.
  • HTML site with Flash "splash" page.
  • Flash site.
  • JavaScript support of all of the above.
Managing & Maintaining Your Website
  • Updates — Periodic updates keep your website alive and current. I try to perform updates for my clients within 24 hours of notification.
  • Secure Directories — You might want a portion of your site to be available to a few select individuals or group. I can password protect these areas when desired.
  • Adding New Pages or Elements — Since I have the original source files for your site, it's easy for me to create new pages which will fit seamlessly with what's there already.
  • Creating/Managing Email — You may need a new email address from time to time since people may know you from disparate parts of your life or business. Or, you may add staff members who need their own email boxes.

Re-working or Adding to Pre-existing Sites

Some of the sites I now maintain were sites I inherited from other designers or clients. Often, I've cleaned them up, fixed what doesn't work or added pages and features that were not already present. Give me a call, tell me what you'd like to accomplish — I'll look at your site and give you a quote.

Creating a Site for You to Maintain

Many designers won't build sites they won't be maintaining for clients. I'm fine with building a site for you and having you take care of it from there. I'll also provide tutorial time to make sure you have the skills necessary to manage your site on your own. (See side-bar note at right "Should you have me maintain your site or should you maintain it yourself?")

Creating Components for Your Site

I also design components for clients and/other designers to use in their work. Some of these include but are not limited to the following:

  • Rollover navigation buttons
  • Site headers
  • Flash banners or buttons
  • Flash introductory "splash" pages
  • Basic homepage templates

Search Engine Optimization

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is highly suggested for all sites since it will affect your site's search enging rankings and the ability of users to find your site on the internet. I employ a number of methods to insure that your site is easy to find by others.

Web Services

Most of my clients have asked me to make arrangements for hosting, securing URL's, setting up email and managing settings for their sites through a hosting control panel. Not only does this help the client, it enables me to have greater control over the site and how it functions.

Should you have me maintain your website or should you maintain it yourself?

...In my experience, clients who want a solid and consistent website will choose to have me manage and maintain it. Despite the best of intentions, clients or their staff usually lack the complete set of skills necessary to update and format pages in line with best practices or to achieve desired results. In the end, it is usually more practical and cost effective to have me manage and maintain your site...
